Nikita Khrushchev came to rule the USSR after Stalin died. Khrushchev started acting nice to gain the people's support. In an attempt to make Hungary happy, Khrushchev removed all the Russian troops from the country. While Khrushchev was in his nice mode, Hungary felt that it would the perfect time to break free from the satellite nations and get out of the USSR's control. When Khrushchev got word of Hungary's plan to try to leave Russian control, he immediately took action. In November 1956, 30,000 Hungarians were killed because of a Russian attack. The USSR brought in tanks and bombs to kill everyone who opposed their rule. The Hungarians that managed to escape the aggression of the USSR, came to the USA looking for help. The USA would not send military troops to Hungary, but they did send money for food, medicine, and furthur help of Hungarians. The USA also opened up its borders for more Hungarians to find shelter from the USSR. The USA did not like how the USSR was treated its satellite nations, nor how the USSR responded to Hungary trying to break away from them.
WOW. I had no idea Khrushchev was so cruel. Giving them some freedom and then taking it all away along with their lives and hopes and dreams. This post really shows the evils of war and politics and strategy. The Cold War was truly awful.
