The Korean War

The Korean War is one example of Cold War tension. The war was fought between North and South Korea. North Korea fought for communisism and they were aided by the USSR. Their leader was Kim Il Sung. South Korea did not want communism and they were led by Syngman Rhee. The UN Security Council declaed that they would support South Korea so that the country would not fall to communism. The USA was one of the countries in the UN that helped support South Korea. The USA's own General MacArthur led the UN's troops and the troops from South Korea. They pushed North Korean troops back over the 38th parallel many times during the war, but the troops were also pushed back on their side of the parallel equally as many times. The command of the UN troops and South Korean troops switches over to the U.S. Eighth Army when General MacArthur is fired. After fighting for a couple more years and getting no where, North and South Korea both sign an armistice in July 1953. Korea was not reunified, but communism had been contained in North Korea.
